He was a sports fan. He was a sports writer. He was a sports executive. He provided the questions for the “Colts Quiz” that Eddie gave his fiancés on the eve of their wedding
in “Diner.” He was first an acolyte, then a co-worker and later a close friend of the great John Unitas, of whom Ernie once said: “God had a good day the day He came up with Johnny U.”
He was also a gentleman, and exceedingly good company, and it was my privilege to call him a friend for the last 30 years.

Winston is well into the second phase of his career as a high-end backup. His results have been solid in aggregate, though his play style ensures a roller-coaster ride. Over the past four seasons, Winston has recorded a very high 3.9% turnover rate but still managed a 49.7 QBR in that span. This is because he’s willing to push the ball downfield. Winston’s 9.6 air yards per attempt since 2022 is higher than any qualifying quarterback registered last season.

Changing the Giants’ culture off the field and identity on the field was always going to be one of the greatest challenges for John Harbaugh when he took over as head coach. He inherited a team whose culture was nonexistent and whose recent identity was of a perennial loser.
He conversely brought with him a longtime and sustained winning culture and identity with the Ravens. Already, some of it was noticeable in their Week 1 win over the Cowboys.
“I’d say it’s really his identity, his culture,” tight end Isaiah Likely told The Post after practice on Friday. “Obviously with the Ravens, he had been there for so long, it feels like it was the Ravens identity. But coach Harbaugh was always the head coach. I feel like he instilled the Ravens mantra and everything. So when he got over here, I guess you can quote-unquote say it was the Ravens mantra, but it’s coach Harbaugh’s culture.”

“Everyone’s probably saying, ‘Oh, the Giants are this and that, they’re so good, they’re so great,’ because we won,’’ Ricard said. “We’re trying to stay humble. We’re trying to stay hungry. It’s a week-to-week thing. Those human emotions, we’re trying to stay level, we’re trying to stay even keel throughout this whole thing.’’
Ricard was with the Ravens the past nine years. He knows the drill. Harbaugh has been there, done that, as far as winning loads of games with the Ravens and then winning some more of them.
“I feel like it goes to culture,’’ Nubin said. “The best teams when they win they come in the next day and they feel like they lost, because you’re just so meticulous on the details. That’s exactly coach Harbaugh’s mindset. That’s how I felt coming into the building the next day, I didn’t feel like we were on top of the world.’’
