The Washington Wizards are still at a point in their rebuild where they cannot afford to get picky positionally when scouting players and making deals with other teams.
A solid foundation exists with Trae Young, Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr at the center flanked by Tre Johnson, Anthony Davis, Bilal Coulibaly and Justin Champagnie, but that group leaves a lot to be desired, especially offensively.
In order to juice their 28th-ranked offense, this offseason I propose the Wizards try and deal with the Chicago
Bulls, a team with more sparkplug sixth men than the rest of the league combined.
The Wizards have a lot of guards on the roster, sure, but a lot of the ones who populate this season’s Basketball Reference page are non-NBA caliber players who have been filling out tanking game night box scores.
There are many reasons to trade with the Bulls. For one, the team’s incompetent front office habitually trades assets either for 60 cents on the dollar or once said assets’ trade value has mostly, if not entirely, depreciated. Think of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Alex Caruso, Coby White and Lauri Markkanen — all players traded for, at best, outright worse players.
Now consider the breadth of options available and the cheap price at which they could be acquired. There is simply not enough playing time available for Collin Sexton, Anfernee Simons, Rob Dillingham, Jaden Ivey and Tre Jones to all shine or develop as needed, meaning the Bulls will almost certainly be looking to move on from at least one or two of them this offseason.
None of these players would be game-changing, but a player like Collin Sexton especially would hold tremendous value as both an offensive spark plug and a locker room leader for Wizards like Tre Johnson who are not terribly concerned with exerting themselves on the defensive side of the ball.
