Newcastle United has spent much of the summer signing young players with an eye on the future, but the Magpies still have work to do before the transfer window closes on Sept. 1.
Full-back Amar Dedic will strengthen the right side of Matthias Jaissle’s defense as the latest incoming player, but Newcastle keeps getting linked with several center backs that could add to the Magpies’ defensive corps.
In a completely new development, Turkish outlet Fanatik reported on Tuesday that Newcastle has approached
Galatasaray with a €40 million (£34.5 million) offer for Ivory Coast international Wilfried Singo.
“Newcastle United, a Premier League team, has officially entered the race for the 25-year-old versatile player,” Fanatik reported. “According to Sabah newspaper, the English club allegedly approached Galatasaray with a record-breaking transfer fee offer of 40 million euros.”
Singo only joined Galatasaray from Monaco last summer for approximately €30 million (£25.9 million), meaning Newcastle’s reported proposal would already give the Turkish champion a substantial return on its investment after just one season.
Galatasaray, however, is reportedly trying to extract an even larger fee of around €60 million (£51.3 million) rather than immediately accepting Newcastle’s cut-price offer.
“Galatasaray management is not rushing into a decision regarding the star central defender, who has a long-term contract with the club until 2030,” Fanatik reported.
Newcastle’s interest in Singo is not new. The Magpies were first linked with the defender more than a year ago while he was still at Monaco, when his market valuation back then was set at around €25 million — higher than his current one of €23 million.
Singo’s ability to operate both centrally and at right back would give Jaissle additional flexibility as Newcastle attempts to refresh an aging defense, but the question is whether €40 million is a good investment in someone who could arrive for cover at two already-filled positions in the Magpies squad.
Would you increase the offer for Singo, sign him for €40, or simply pass on him and focus on another defensive target? Share your view in the comments section below.
