For the entirety of the offseason the Chicago Bears largely stood pat with their defensive line. Today brings an entirely new face to the lineup as well as a reunion between a veteran and his former coach.
Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports the Bears are expected to sign defensive end Marcus Davenport. The official terms of the deal are not known to be finalized as of the writing of this article. This is also his 3rd different team in the last five years. He most recently played for the Detroit Lions from
2024 through 2025.
Let’s get the pink elephant out of the way first. He’s played in only 14 games since signing his 1-year $13M deal with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 due to injuries. That is a far cry from his 63 career appearances while with Dennis Allen and the New Orleans Saints from 2018 until 2022.
He was a completely different player under Allen than anywhere else he’s been in the league. That includes registering a respectable 21.5 sacks — and a career best 9.0 in 2021 — along with 95 pressures following his selection at 14th overall during the 2018 NFL Draft. It remains to be seen how much the 8-year veteran has left in the tank.
This is the first “notable” move the Bears have made at defensive end to this date. Whether or not more changes are on the way remains to be seen.
