It’s clear the New Orleans Saints must invest in their young talent, and it’s time to see some of these players start over the veterans in front of them.
DT Christen Miller
Somehow, Miller was a healthy scratch against the Falcons. A poor decision that made little sense then. Miller could have helped defend Bijan Robinson (and apparently Brian Robinson Jr.), and Davon Godchaux was injured at the end of the game. It feels like the writing is on the wall with Godchaux, and with Miller’s impressive preseason, he needs
to start. At least the Saints need to see what they have with Miller, and even if he struggles (which wouldn’t be shocking because he’s still a ROOKIE), it’s important that he gets reps.
TE Oscar Delp
Delp continues to be a big part of the offense, but with the entire offensive line’s struggles during the Falcons game, his job to try and help block was way too much for a young player, or really any player. Delp’s blocking issues have removed him as a passing option, which is unfortunate, and I hope they can elevate him over Fant as a receiver soon. His blocking is just too important right now.
OG Jeremiah Wright
Hot take (or maybe not), the Saints should just start Wright. I’m not saying it’ll be better in the short term, but if it’s already pretty bad, you can’t go lower. The Saints selected Wright for a reason, and seeing what he can do as a starter is extremely important before the season ends. Also, with the team being 1-3, it’s time to start considering loading up on draft picks, and Cesar Ruiz can be a trade piece.
WR Bryce Lance
It’s sadly clear that Bryce Lance is not ready to be that WR3 yet. He makes some plays and blocks well, but he is making rookie mistakes the Saints can’t afford. Also, Tyler Shough has not been able to connect with Lance on the deep ball, but the Saints want to make that happen, which is positive.
WR Barion Brown
Brown’s return game has not been good enough, which is a surprise. That was the one area we felt that Brown could make an impact right away, but it’s been too inconsistent. Maybe with Lance’s struggles last game, Brown may get into the offense more, but also, I wouldn’t push it.
RB CJ Donaldson
This is the first time I’m adding Donaldson to the list, and it’s long overdue. Donaldson has been the best blocker in the RB room, but for some reason he wasn’t utilized in that role against the Falcons, eventhough the offensive line was struggling. Also, Donaldson’s strong running style is something the Saints currently lack, and I believe he fits better with what Kellen Moore is trying to do in the run game. The Kendre Miller project is over, and it’s time for Donaldson to take over.
OT Mason Murphy
Asim Richards’ struggles showed that the Saints need to go in another direction, and Mason Murphy is the clear choice. It’s time to make some changes.
Injured players:
- WR Jordyn Tyson
- DB Lorenzo Styles Jr.
