Bayern Munich, even amidst an injury crisis, showed who they really are. Ask their own players.
Bayern faced Atlético Madrid away in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. There was plenty of doubt regarding whether the Bavarians could hold their own in such a hostile environment, especially considering how many crucial players they had lost to injury. Der Klassiker—the most important domestic game of the season—was a bloodbath to say the least, resulting in four injuries and a match that somehow
ended in a draw even though the Bavarians were poised to win. Amidst tons of commentary questioning the team’s capabilities at this juncture, they managed to silence the critics with a fantastic away win.
Konrad Laimer spoke about this statement performance after the match. “We went into the game knowing what we’re capable of. There has been a lot written about us and everything surrounding the team, but we have big confidence in our squad and the players we have,” he explained, as recorded by @iMiaSanMia.
“I think we showed that over the full 90 minutes today: the way we can play football and the way we want to play. Ultimately, I think we could even have scored a few more goals,” he went on.
“It was a thoroughly deserved win against a good team. These are three important points that will certainly give us another boost ahead of the next game against Mainz and the weeks to come,” he declared, referring to the victory as a major morale booster.
He further emphasized the table standings, noting the massive significance of the result. “It is really important. We now have eight points. When you are here, you want to win every game. It was an away game against a really good team,” he said, per @iMiaSanMia.
With eight points from four matches—two wins and two draws—Bayern currently sit in the top eight, keeping them on track for automatic qualification.
Emphasizing that the team cannot afford to ease up, Laimer called the three points much-needed. “We have to keep going; we want to win the last four games and finish as high as possible in the standings,” he declared.
