After splitting their weekend series against the Royals, the Tigers invited the Mets to town and dropped the first game of the series in a rough Labor Day outing. Now that we’re in the final month of the season, the Tigers really need to lock in and try to win as much as possible (duh). The Tigers are presently neck-and-neck with the Blue Jays for AL supremacy, and have a nine-game lead in the AL Central. Their passport to the postseason is all but stamped, but they can’t rest on their laurels over
the next four weeks.
Of course, the Tigers aren’t the only team making a final push this month, and we have a lot of tidbits from across baseball from over the long weekend.
Detroit Tigers News
- ESPN took a look at the playoff races to watch, and of the AL top seed race, between Detroit and the Blue Jays, they tried to narrow down which players to watch on the Tigers’ roster. Of those players, they said:
The Tigers have been searching for a No. 2 starter behind Tarik Skubal all year. Jack Flaherty has been inconsistent all season and had three starts in August where he allowed five or more runs. Casey Mize has a 7.20 ERA over his past eight starts. Chris Paddack? No. Maybe it’s 41-year-old vet Charlie Morton, who has a 4.61 ERA in his five starts with Detroit, as he has mixed in three excellent outings with two bad ones (although he fanned 10 in one of the bad ones). No matter what, there are going to be a lot of bullpen games for the Tigers in the playoffs when Skubal isn’t pitching, especially since the pen was much better in August after struggling in June and July (and adding some depth at the deadline).
- September means all eyes on roster moves!
- Old friend Kenta Maeda will be heading to Japan to pitch next season.
- The Athletic looked at the remaining schedule for all playoff hopeful teams of the final month of the year, we obviously had to look at them specifically. For the Tigers, The Athletic said:
The Tigers still have breathing room, though it narrowed last week when they lost five of six to the Athletics and Royals before Tarik Skubal shoved Sunday. Both New York teams are in the playoff picture and will be dangerous down the stretch. The Tigers are trying to secure the top seed in the American League, but it’s the Yankees who have the league’s best run differential. The Yankees could be the last winning team the Tigers play until they travel to Boston the last weekend of the season.
- Is Tommy Kahnle fixed?
