Ohio State’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams held a doubleheader at the Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday. Unfortunately both teams weren’t able to secure a win.
The women’s squad tried to set the tone early, beating Vanderbilt 16-4 in their final game before they open up Big Ten next week.
The men’s team fought valiantly against Notre Dame, but fell just short of knocking off the top-ranked team in the country.
To open up the doubleheader on Saturday, the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team was
able to cap off a perfect three-game homestand with an easy victory over Vanderbilt. After the Commodores took a 1-0 lead, the Buckeyes rattled off three straight goals to take control of the game, pushing their lead to 5-3 by the end of the first quarter.
The goal by Kate Tyack to close out the first quarter would kick off a stretch where Ohio State would score 11 unanswered goals, holding the Commodores scoreless for nearly 45 minutes.
Tyack would finish the game with a team-high four goals. Annie Hargraves and Brooke Vinson would each find the net three times in the game. Maddy Paz recorded a career-high four assists and five points in the blowout victory on Saturday.
Following her output on Saturday, Tyack has 28 points on the season, which is tied with Camryn Callaghan for the most on the team. Callaghan currently has a team-high 20 goals this year, which is three more than Tyack has recorded.
The only other Buckeye with at least 10 goals is Maddy Paz, who has 12 scores to go along with 20 points. Zoe Coleman and Kampbell Stone are knocking on the door of double-digit goals in 2026, as both players have nine goals.
Carrying Ohio State during their three-game winning streak has been a potent offense along with a suffocating defense. During their recent trio of games at home, the Buckeyes have given up a total of 11 goals, while scoring at least 16 goals in each of those contests.
Jocelyn Torres finished with 10 saves in goal in Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt, and through seven games this season has a 9.49 goals against average and a .454 save percentage.
By starting the season 5-2, Ohio State is already well on their way to matching their win total from the 2024 and 2025 seasons when they won eight games each year.
After taking on Northwestern in Evanston next Sunday, the Buckeyes return home a few days later to host Rutgers on Thursday, March 19.
Ohio State’s men’s lacrosse team falls just short of topping top-ranked Notre Dame
Ohio State’s men’s team tried to capitalize on the momentum set back the women’s team earlier in the day. The Buckeyes faced their toughest test so far this season, hosting the top-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
After Notre Dame went up 2-0 to start the game, Garrett Haas and Liam White responded with goals to tie the game at two at the end of the first quarter.
The Buckeyes would hold a 4-3 lead at the end of the first half, followed by a 6-5 lead at the end of the third quarter, but they couldn’t put any distance on the Fighting Irish. Failure to find the killer instinct to put away one of the top programs in the nation would be the undoing of Ohio State on Saturday.
After Alex Mariner scored his team-high 17th goal of the season with 6:44 left in the fourth quarter to give the Buckeyes an 8-7 lead, Notre Dame would cap off the scoring with two goals in the next four minutes to secure the victory.
The final tally of the day for the Fighting Irish would come from Josh Yago, who had three goals in the game. Despite Ohio State outshooting Notre Dame 37-28, the Fighting Irish were just a little better at making their shots count in the victory.
The stars of the game for Ohio State were Garrett Haas, Liam White, and Jackson Walsh, who each had two goals. Haas is currently the team’s leading scorer by a sizable margin, as his 30 points are 10 more than what Alex Mariner has posted through seven games.
Mariner leads the team with 17 goals, which is one more than Haas has recorded. White and Khalif Hocker round out the Buckeyes with at least 10 goals so far in 2026.
Ohio State’s men’s team is back in action at home on Thursday when they host Denver before hitting the road in conference play for the first time this season when they travel to New Jersey to take on Rutgers on Saturday, March 21.
