The German Football Association (DFB) has long believed Jurgen Klopp to be the ideal German national team coach. Despite attempts to ink the 59-year-old’s signature after Joachim Löw stepped down from the position in 2021, and 2023 when Hansi Flick was sacked by the DFB, Klopp rejected the advances, choosing to honour his Liverpool contract.
Timing has always been the main obstacle blocking Klopp’s path to coaching the German national team. But after Germany’s shock World Cup Round of 32 exit to Paraguay,
are the stars finally aligning for the former Borussia Dortmund manager?
In an interview with German sports network MagentaTV, Klopp played down fierce rumours linking him to the Germany job after Julian Nagelsmann finds himself on the hot seat given Germany’s underwhelming World Cup campaign.
“I haven’t thought about that yet,” explained Klopp (as captured by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg). “I understand that my name is being mentioned now. But it’s not the time to talk about that.”
While the Red Bull head of football threw cold water on the rumours, he also didn’t rule it out entirely.
In fact, Florian Plettenberg believes the German national team job is one of only two jobs the former Liverpool coach would return for should “everything fit.”
As revealed there are at least two projects for which he would return if EVERYTHING fits: Real Madrid (not now) and the German national team.
Whatever “if everything fits” means is open to interpretation. Real Madrid seems unlikely, but given the timing and a young, talented German squad screaming out for a suitable coach, perhaps there is a chance Klopp will finally become the German national team coach.
