With the 2025-26 NHL season now officially concluded, attention for hockey fans drifts towards the usual summer action of the draft and free agency. For the New Jersey Devils, that means a 12th overall selection that can hopefully bolster the team’s prospect pool (if the choice isn’t traded) and an opportunity to augment the current main through player signings. Fans of all 32 NHL franchises salivate at the start of the summer, as it inspires hope that things can change and get any club closer to a Stanley
Cup, or to repeating. However, there also needs to be some caution exercised by fan bases during this time.
For the New Jersey Devils especially, the draft isn’t going to have an impact on the club right away. Mid-first picks usually pan out into NHL players, but they typically need some time to develop. Free agency isn’t some magic panacea either, as more often than not it is overpaying for marginal players that may or may not actually improve the club depending upon how well they mesh with the current team and system. For those reasons, the Devils need to be cautious this offseason.
There are a number of Devils approaching free agency over the next couple of seasons, and while Nico Hischier (who already could be figuring out his potential next deal) is easily the most important, there needs to be room to re-sign other contributing pieces. The salary cap going up will help, but if the team continues to sign overpriced contracts for players who decline and/or don’t contribute, then the extra space becomes a moot point. The hope here has to be that with a change in management, the Devils won’t be signing as many bad deals, or at least not giving out no trade/movement clauses like candy on Halloween. GM Sunny Mehta has a reputation for making smart signings based off of analytics, and that’s exactly what the Devils need to augment their current group.
There are a few additional reasons to temper expectations and not expect a blockbuster summer from the Devils. Firstly, for anyone who has looked at the list of unrestricted free agents, it’s pretty underwhelming; sure, there’s a few attractive options as usual, but some are either definitely going back to their previous team if they remain in the NHL (Alex Ovechkin) or are bound to have multiple suitors. If it’s the latter case, that falls under the earlier issue of overpaying for marginal upgrades. If Alex Tuch is willing to come to New Jersey for the right price, then absolutely find a way to sign that contract. Otherwise, save the money and pursue other avenues of improvement.
The other pair of additional reasons are internal: goaltending and right defense specifically. Goaltending is the priority due to Jacob Markstrom being flat out bad to the point where I tried to figure out if there were a way to buy him out as soon as his new deal starts. Right defense is an issue of “too much money for too many bodies” and the Devils need to figure out who to move. Brett Pesce is really the only safe bet to still be a Devils. If the Devils try to move Johnny Kovacevic, it’s probably for a roughly equivalent player at a different position. Simon Nemec or Dougie Hamilton could be moved in the right deal to upgrade the team, but can it be done in a way that solves multiple problems, such as the goaltending, at the same time? Only time will tell.
The Devils may be making some moves this summer, but outside of maybe an improvement through trade, I think we all may need to keep our expectations reasonable for what the Devils may or may not do.
What are your thoughts as the the draft and free agency draw nearer? Do you think the Devils swing a trade? Do you think they go after one of the few free agent big fish who might fit the current team? Is there another route not discussed you think they pursue?
