Setting the scene
The third Big 12 vs. ACC matchup of the season kicks off Saturday afternoon from Nippert Stadium.
It’s been seven seasons since Cincinnati hammered Boston College by 32 points in the 2019 Birmingham Bowl. The Bearcats have since moved to the Big 12, and they’re steadily acclimating to the league. They’ve improved their win total by two each year under Scott Satterfield, culminating in a 7-6 finish to 2025. However, they enter this opener on a five-game losing streak.
But that pales in comparison to
the losing streak Boston College endured last fall. The Eagles lost 10 consecutive games, bookened by victories in the season opener and season finale. Third-year head coach Bill O’Brien eyes a drastic turnaround in year three at the helm, and a road upset in Big 12 Country would be a perfect start.
Boston College Eagles outlook
Boston College started the 2026 season with 106 points in its first two matchups. One was against FCS competition, the other Michigan State, and the unit never scored more than 24 again until the final two weeks of the season.
The offense’s primary struggles were offensive line related. The pass protection allowed the 16th-most sacks per game in the country at 2.83, and there was no push for the ground attack, which was 10th-to-last in the FBS at 104 yards per game. Boston College only returns one offensive starter — center Michael Crouse — so there will be a near-full reset on offense, which could be necessary.
Transfers Veguer Jean-Jumeau (FCS Tennessee State) and Kristian Phillips (Michigan State) now anchor the boundaries of the line, and Jean-Jumeau brings a 6’9”, 305-pound presence to the pass protection. Boston College also reloaded its running back room with Evan Dickens, whose 1,339 rushing yards ranked ninth nationally in 2025, as well as Maryland transfer Nolan Ray as a complementary piece with size.
Boston College quietly assembled a viable passing attack in a 2-10 season, ranking 15th nationally with 280 yards per game. The Eagles start anew at the position, bringing in Division II Saginaw Valley State transfer Mason McKenzie. McKenzie provides a dual-threat presence Boston College lacked at quarterback last year after contributing 2,086 passing yards and 942 rushing yards at the D2 level.
The Eagles are down their top five receivers from 2025, including tight end Kaelan Chudzinski who suffered an Achilles injury. Transfers Javarius Green (North Carolina) and Reed Swanson (FCS Colgate) and incumbent Jaedn Skeete are the primary targets looking to replace the production lost by the departures of Lewis Bond and Reed Harris.
Boston College needs turnover improvement on both sides. The Eagles finished a minus-9 in turnover margin last year, finishing a minus-3 in three ACC contests. Returning safety KP Price should help from a defensive perspetive. Price was the only Eagle to record multiple interceptions in 2025, and his 94 tackles ranked atop the roster. He’ll be joined by in the defensive backfield Carter Davis, who generated the third-most tackles on the team from the safety spot.
The Eagles desperately need a pass rush to improve upon their 123rd-ranked scoring defense. Nobody registered more than 2.5 sacks last year. Starting nose tackle Chris Marable Jr. returns to handle the interior, while transfers Kris Jones (Georgia) and KJ Sampson (Florida State) seek expanding playing time at Boston College, ready to showcase their potential in a new home.
Cincinnati Bearcats outlook
Cincinnati typically starts seasons well under Scott Satterfield. Finishing has been the problem. The Bearcats started 2-0 in 2023 and finished 3-9. Then, started 5-2 in 2024 and finished 5-7. Finally, started 7-1 in 2025 and finished 7-6.
Before a single snap is taken, the Bearcats can lean on one position group for success. They field one of the best offensive lines in the country, returning three starters in guard-turned-center Taran, left guard Evan Tengesdahl, and left tackle Joe Cotton. Tengesdahl earned AP All-American honors, while Cotton was an All-Big 12 selection, and they were well warranted. Cincinnati’s pass protection allowed just eight sacks last year, marking the fewest in the country outside of Army. Meanwhile, the line paved the way for the run game to attain the third-highest yards per play in the FBS.
The running back room completely turns over to transfers Gi’Bran Payne (Notre Dame), Zylan Perry (Louisiana), and Cole Tabb (Stanford), as well as incumbent Zion Johnson, a former highly-touted recruit who enters his redshirt freshman season. Cincinnati should lean heavily on that rotation behind an assertive offensive line. The Bearcats didn’t run enough last year, and it proved costly as they finished last nationally in time of possession.
Cincinnati also unveils a new quarterback in JC French IV, who takes over for Brendan Sorsby. French started two seasons at Georgia Southern and became the program’s all-time leading passer, while showcasing mobility on the side. French should enjoy stronger pass protection at Cincinnati than he did at his previous stop, perhaps able to build on a 2,929-yard, 20-touchdown season in his new home.
To move through the air, Cincinnati will turn to several former FCS standouts. JV Gibson (who most recently played at Oklahoma), Larenzo Fenner, and Malachi Henry were all highly successful at the lower subdivision, hoping their talents translate in the Big 12. They’ll rotate as the boundary receivers, while Isaiah Johnson and Kent State transfer Cade Wolford bring big-play potential to the slot position, averaging 15.9 and 26.8 yards per catch, respectively, in 2025.
The Bearcat defense will implement a different scheme this year. Former Army defensive coordinator Nate Woody is bringing his signature 3-4 East Coast look to Cincinnati, and this system will rely more on speed at the linebacker positions. Safety Antwan Peek Jr. was converted to an outside linebacker as a result, and the longtime Bearcat brings 132 career tackles and six forced fumbles of experience to his new role.
Cincinnati loses former All-American nose tackle Dontay Corleone, but replaces the 335-pound presence with a similar build. Division II transfer Josh Hough stands 6’2” and weighs 335 pounds, and he recorded 58 tackles and 11 tackles for loss at California (PA) last fall. He’ll be supported by new edge rusher Thomas Johnson, whose 12.0 sacks and 14 QB hurries of production at FCS NC Central will be sorely needed.
Lastly, Cincinnati’s defense needs a stronger showing in the turnover battle. The Bearcats ranked last in the FBS with two interceptions last year, and a retooled secondary featuring four transfer starters hopes to change their turnover fortunes.
Prediction
Cincinnati should possess the edge on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The Bearcats’ offensive line was extremely consistent last year and only allowed multiple sacks in one game. There could be some growing pains breaking in two new starters on the right side, but overall, Cincinnati should have time in the pocket and open lanes for the running backs.
However, penalties could neutralize the Bearcats’ progress. They accounted for the most penalty yardage per game in the Big 12 and finished 120th in the country in that statistic, and penalties nearly turned several wins — such as Iowa State and Kansas — into losses last year.
Boston College’s run game should be significantly stronger with Evan Dickens and a mobile quarterback in Mason McKenzie. The Eagles take it down to the wire, but Cincinnati ultimately defends home turf on a game-winning Stephen Rusnak field goal.
Prediction: Cincinnati 20, Boston College 17
