Announced just before today’s entertaining 5-1 win over AFC Bournemouth, Cole Palmer has put pen to paper on his latest contract extension, committing his future to the Blues through 2034. Palmer’s previous contract, signed a couple years ago, was set to expire in 2033. So, as usual, it’s not necessarily about the length but about the pay and the incentives.
(Incidentally, there are only four players in the league signed through 2034, three of whom play for Chelsea: Palmer, João Pedro, Geovany Quenda
… and Erling Haaland.)
Palmer followed up the announcement with an excellent game against the Cherries, picking up an assist, his third of the season, to go along with four goals in all competitions as well. The 24-year-old has been back to something approaching his best after a season hit with injuries and poor form (though the groin problem flared up in recent weeks once again, requiring a bit of workload management).
“Chelsea means a lot to me and I think the club is going in the right direction, so I’m delighted to sign and I’m obviously very happy.
“Speaking to the owners, to the sporting directors and obviously the manager, they gave me a lot of confidence so it was only right to sign. Speaking to players as well, everyone has the same ambitions. I feel like we win major trophies here consistently and I want to be a part of that and play a big role in it too.”
