When the calendar turns to October, the high school and collegiate running communities converge on Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the Paul Short Run, the largest invitational race along the east coast. Thousands upon of thousands of runners grace the trails, hoping to make a name for themselves and their programs.
And representing the Terps at the top of the pack of the premier women’s race of the weekend was Rose Coats. The junior posted the fourth-fastest time in the women’s 6,000-meter race by finishing
in a time of 19:45.4, a new personal best and program record by almost eight seconds.
Coats has been Maryland’s star runner across the last year, breaking program records and becoming just the sixth Maryland runner to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships. But Friday, Coats ran the best race of her career, averaging a 5:18 mile across 3.73 miles to finish fourth out of 351 runners in Maryland’s race and 1,357 total 6K finishers. She was just 10.6 seconds behind the race winner.
Overall, it was a strong showing for Maryland. The Terps finished 17th of 40 teams in the Gold section — which housed the sport’s premier programs, including regional powerhouses and top-two finishers Penn State and Villanova — placing 11 spots higher than they did in 2024.
Freshman Katie Dutko and sophomore Eva Rogers placed 63rd and 74th in the section with times of 20:57.7 and 21:04.4, respectively. Junior Lucy Scothern and senior Leonora Lynn rounded out the scoring for Maryland.
