According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Kansas City Chiefs are signing free agent running back Dameon Pierce. Schultz added that Pierce will start on Kansas City’s practice squad.
The Houston Texans made Pierce a fourth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The former Florida Gator looked like a future star out of the gate, totaling 1,104 scrimmage yards with five touchdowns in 13 games as a rookie before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
Pierce never regained his footing in Houston, accounting for only 812 total yards with four touchdowns over his next two seasons. After dressing for only four games in 2025 — and adding only 26 rushing yards — the Texans waived Pierce on Thursday. He cleared waivers and became a free agent. On Friday, Houston reporter Aaron Wilson noted that several teams were instantly interested in the running back.
The Chiefs have established a solid (if unspectacular) running backs group fronted by fellow 2022 draftee Isiah Pacheco and veteran Kareem Hunt. Pacheco has missed the Chiefs’ last three games after suffering an MCL sprain in Week 8 against the Washington Commanders.
At the trade deadline earlier this month, Kansas City was reportedly engaged in talks with the New York Jets for running back Breece Hall.
Should Pierce impress Kansas City after arriving in town, he should be a good candidate to replace running back Elijah Mitchell, who has appeared in only one game this season.
