Northwestern (5-3-6, 1-2-4 B1G) could not hold onto the lead in Bloomington Thursday, losing to Indiana (4-4-5, 1-2-4 B1G).
The ‘Cats started off
hot, taking the first four shots of the game. Then, just over 30 minutes into regulation, Indiana’s Haden Vlcek fouled Kelsey Kwon, setting up a Northwestern penalty kick. Midfielder Caterina Regazzoni took the shot for NU, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and putting the ball through the net to give the ‘Cats the early 1-0 advantage.
Much like the start of the first half, the ‘Cats came out of the halftime break swinging. They took multiple shots at the goal, several of which nearly resulted in a score. However, they could not convert on any of them.
Indiana, who had struggled on offense for much of the game, finally found success with just under 10 minutes to play, when freshman Grace Hamm found the back of the net to tie the game and turn the tides for the Hoosiers after a dominant first half for the Wildcats.
Then, just over eight minutes later, in the penultimate minute of the game, midfielder Maggie Ledwith connected on what would be the game-winning shot. Northwestern would wind up losing 2-1 due to the Hoosiers’ late-game heroics.
Following the loss in Bloomington, the ‘Cats returned home for a match against Rutgers in Evanston on Sunday for Senior Day.
