The Syracuse Orange football team’s highest-ranked recruit in over two decades will be sidelined for an “indefinite period of time,” the program announced Tuesday.
Calvin Russell III — a five-star and consensus top-50 2026 recruit who also joined the men’s basketball program — was injured during practice, according to a statement by head coach Fran Brown.
“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have,”
Brown wrote in the statement.
As of now, it’s unclear what injury Russell is dealing with or a timeline for recovery. (Editor’s note: yes, we saw the rumors of an achilles injury, but no official confirmation has been given at this point).
Russell committed to the Orange in July 2025. The Miami, Florida native picked the Orange over several notable Power Four schools, including Michigan, Alabama, Miami (FL), Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma and Penn State.
With Russell out with injury, the spotlight will be on the rest of the receiving group, which will be quite different this year.
In the transfer portal, Syracuse landed receivers Elijah Moore (Florida State), Matthew Outten (Penn State), Cole Weaver (Miami, OH) and Zamondre Merriweather (JUCO). Syracuse’s 2026 recruiting class at receivers also includes four-star Amare’ Gough plus three-stars BJ Garrett and Phoenix Henriquez, along with a handful of returning names from the 2025 roster.
Combined, the group will look to fill the void Russell was expected to fill with the transfer portal departures of the team’s top-two receivers last year in Darrell Gill Jr. and Johntay Cook.
