The Miami Hurricanes cruised to a comfortable win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats tonight in Hard Rock Stadium, 45-3. Many younger players got in the game for Coach Cristobal. That could be valuable experience with USF coming to town next week. If you didn’t know, USF beat the Florida Gators earlier today in Gainesville. I just had to mention that. Back to the Canes.
Let’s get to the three stars of the game.
1. Carson Beck
Miami’s new quarterback looked impressive for the second week in a row, albeit against a considerably
inferior opponent. Beck finished 22-24 for 267 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also broke the school record for consecutive completions in a game with 15, topping Vinny Testaverde’s 14 from 1986. Pretty cool. Beck did target Malachi Toney and CJ Daniels quite a bit, but I’m nitpicking. There is nothing wrong with having two reliable guys on the outside that can make big plays. I now want to see what Beck can do against a USF squad that will come into Hard Rock Stadium looking to beat another ranked team from the state of Florida.
2. Daniels and Toney
The Canes’ two best pass catchers looked awesome tonight. Toney had 6 receptions for 80 yards. Daniels had 5 catches for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns. These two are everything Miami fans could have hoped for and more. Toney is explosive in the open field. He had a great juke on a 24-yard catch and run. Daniels has been a magnet for the football. Both of his touchdown catches showed his hands and concentration. I did not think he would be this good. With Jojo Trader hopefully coming back fully healthy next week or soon, Miami’s wide receiver room is definitely not a weakness for 2025.
3. Mesidor and Bane
Mesidor and Bane sounds like a bad TNT buddy cop show. Luckily for Canes fans, they are the last names of one of the best defensive end duos in the country. They combined for 5 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, a sack, and a forced fumble. The highlight below shows just how fast and powerful Bane is. Mesidor was arguably more consistent tonight; he was living in the Bethune-Cookman backfield in the first half. With these two guys on the edge, Coach Cristobal and his defensive staff have to feel good about their ability to close out a game.
Honorable mention:
Mark Fletcher Jr – With Jordan Lyle out tonight, Fletcher took the lead from the start and set the tone on the ground with the offensive line. He finished with 11 carries for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus one catch for 12 yards.
Keionte Scott – Scott was all over the field in the first half. I love the way he plays from the secondary. He finished with 3 tackles, all TFLs.
