The position has come into focus as uncertainty grows around the squad, with multiple players attracting interest and the club preparing for a wider reshuffle. Recruitment plans are expected to target players capable of strengthening key areas while fitting into long-term planning.
Araujo has emerged as one of the names under consideration, with the Uruguay international
impressing in Portugal this season. His ability to operate as both a left-back and wing-back has drawn attention from several clubs across Europe.
Sport Witness reported that Newcastle are among a number of Premier League sides now tracking the 26-year-old. “Newcastle United and Aston Villa have joined the chase for Sporting’s Maxi Araújo,” the report stated.
The same report adds that strong competition is expected for his signature, with multiple English clubs following his progress closely.
“A source has now informed Sport Witness that eight Premier League sides are following the South American,” Sport Witness reported.
Sporting are understood to be open to a sale, with a fee in the region of €45-50million required to secure a deal, despite a higher release clause in his contract.
