The Green Bay Packers made an interesting move on Thursday, as they brought in two punters for tryouts. Generally, the Packers only bring in visitors on Mondays or Tuesdays, which made this Thursday set of tryouts stick out.
Punter Daniel Whelan also isn’t injured, according to the Packers’ most recent injury report, which makes this situation even more head-scratching. Maybe Green Bay is just keeping their emergency list updated, but this timing is still a little out of the ordinary.
The players the
Packers bought in were Jack Stonehouse and James Rendell, both 2026 undrafted free agents. Stonehouse is the cousin of Ryan Stonehouse, who played for the Tennessee Titans for three years and was named an All-Pro as a rookie. Jack signed with Houston in post-draft free agency and was waived by the team in August. Since then, he’s worked out for the Washington Commanders and Minnesota Vikings.
Rendell is an international player from Australia, so he would count as an international exemption (in place of Krieg) if signed to the Packers’ practice squad. It appears that Rendell was invited to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ rookie minicamp this offseason, but he never signed with an NFL club.
For perspective, below is Green Bay’s full 17-man practice squad at the moment:
- QB: Kedon Slovis
- RB: None
- WR: Isaiah Neyor, Quincy Skinner Jr. and Coleman Owen (called up last week)
- TE: Drake Dabney
- OL: Dalton Cooper, Dillon Wade and Mekhi Becton Sr.
- DL: David Blay Jr. and Mazi Smith
- ED: Nyjalik Kelly and Arron Mosby (called up last week)
- LB: Jack Dingle
- CB: Domani Jackson and Elijah Culp
- S: Kahlef Hailassie
- K: Lenny Krieg (international exemption)
- P: None
- LS: None
As a reminder, the Packers have a 50-man roster at the moment, which means that they could add players to the practice squad without a release if they move practice squad players up to the active roster. With that being said, running back Josh Jacobs and defensive lineman Jordon Riley are expected to be moved up to the active roster soon, which should take up two of the three vacancies.
