Even with deep changes in their squad this summer Wolfsburg remain a very strong team, especially when playing at home. Chelsea Women are well aware of such a challenge even if the squad that once beat
them at home in the UEFA Women’s Champions League nearly six years ago is also long gone.
As expected it was an evenly matched contest, where Chelsea won the battle for possession but began losing the fight for goals with Alexandra Popp opening the scoreline. Not to worry though as Lucy Bronze levelled for us right before we went into the tunnels at halftime.
Proper tactical tweaks on the back of some good talking in the dressing room made Chelsea return to the pitch like a whole new team. It took less than a minute for Alyssa Thompson to almost find the comeback goal for the Blues. And it didn’t take very long for us to finally get it via Sam Kerr.
Wolfsburg’s desperation at the end of the match got things too close for comfort on our defensive end. But we held strong and locked down a top-four finish in the group stage of the continental competition.
Carefree!
- Livia Peng still starts even though Hannah Hampton is in the squad.
- Marvellous first half from Lucy Bronze.
- A direct spot in the Champions League playoffs is ours!
- Next up: Liverpool away in the Women’s League Cup
- KTBFFH!
