We first saw that Kansas’ freshman sensation Darryn Peterson was having a hamstring issue a few days ago, but as it turns out, it’s been going on for a bit longer than most people knew.
Peterson has been playing through pain for a while but KU coach Bill Self characterized it as “tight,” but is being cautious. Peterson played at UNC but had some issues and sat out against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Princeton, a game that was closer than it would probably have been had he played.
It’s unclear if he’ll
play against Duke in Madison Square Garden, which would be too bad. As former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski often argued, you want your opponent to be at full strength so that if you beat them, you beat them at their best.
Without Peterson, the Jayhawks still have Melvin Council, who is doing well at point, Flory Bidunga, a big man Duke pursued who is vastly more productive as a sophomore, and an athletic Tre White, who spent a season at Louisville two years ago.
Our guess is that Peterson will recover sufficiently to play and we certainly hope he will. However, Self may feel that it’s too risky and may still hold him out.
We’ll know soon enough.
