Following the departure of star Mizzou EDGE Damon Wilson II to Miami, the Tigers picked up a Hurricane of their own in linebacker Malik Bryant.
The news came on Jan. 23 but was confirmed by Mizzou Football’s
X account on Jan. 25. Despite missing a majority of his 2025 season due to injury, Bryant, if he can stay healthy, could be a breakout player on Mizzou’s defense this season. After losing explosive players like Damon Wilson and Zion Young in the offseason, the Tigers could use a splash player.
Bryant appeared in 20 games across three seasons with the Hurricanes. A bulk of his production came during 2024 when he played in 12 games. During 2024 he logged 17 tackles, five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
The Miami-to-Mizzou pipeline is growing, as Bryant becomes the second Hurricanes defensive lineman to commit to the Tigers this month, joining defensive tackle Donta Simpson Jr. A day after Bryant made his announcement, former Miami linebacker Bobby Washington became the third Hurricane to enter the mix after committing to Mizzou.

I couldn’t find a good tape that includes a lot of Bryant highlights from his time with Miami, but the Orlando, Florida, product was a standout high school athlete. Bryant’s high school career began with a dominant freshman season at Orlando Jones, where he logged 14 sacks and a state title appearance. He transferred to powerhouse IMG Academy the following year and was a standout, securing a spot as a MaxPreps Sophomore All-American.
Despite Bryant finding most of his success on the edge, it was impressive to see Bryant drop into coverage and make plays. Bryant has elite speed and he has a chance to have a lot of success in the SEC.
Where He Fits
I’d expect Bryant to play in Damon Wilson’s ‘Joker’ role this upcoming season. The position lines up on the edge and players a linebacker-defensive end role. With Bryant’s speed and ability to get around defenders, I think he should fit quite nicely in the role.
When He Plays
Right Away. These last few additions have been big additions for the Tigers and Bryant is no different. I think Bryant was poised for a big season with Miami this past season but the stars just didn’t align. Now he has that opportunity with the Tigers. Assuming he can stay healthy, I’d expect Bryant to start out of the gates for Mizzou’s defense.
What It Means
This was a strong add by the Tigers following key departures on the defensive side. I think Mizzou is definitely trending in the right direction and I’d be optimistic with how the offense and defense is shaping out ahead of the 2026 season.
