As college athletic departments look for more ways to generate revenue, they will get a new opportunity in the 26-27 athletic year as jersey patches are coming.
Each sport can wear up to two commercial pathches on uniforms and an additonal on equipment, so how should Syracuse approach this? Do you go for a sponsor for all jerseys and try to get a large investment from two local companies? Or maybe you focus
on one major sponsor and look to make the others sport specific?
Obviously the major sports offer sponsors the most value. A logo on football jerseys will appear in front of national audiences. Anytime sponsorships come up like this, we turn to the local companies with ties to the Orange and the potential to step in: Wegmans, Key Bank, JMA Wireless, Dunkin’ to name a few. We should add Micron to that list as they begin the long construction process just outside the city. Could they show their community commitment by stepping in here?
How would a jersey sponsor mesh with Nike, the current apparel? It would likely be the easiest, and most profitable, to get two major sponsors for all sports, but does it appeal to big companies to pay to be on the uniforms of Olympic sports?
We know that in the NIL era, it’s going to be important to be creative and effective in generating revenue. Ticket prices can only go so high, the same boosters can only be called upon so often, and as we’re living now, a disappointing season is going to make it harder to get buy-in. These sponsor deals are going to be important to get right.
Would Syracuse be better off trying to attract multiple sponsors in order to mazimize revenue? Could the success of sports like lacrosse or field hockey offer the chance to land a deal with an apparel company for that sport even if they aren’t based in CNY? Yes, we’re selfishly wondering if we can get the TNIAAM logo added to cross-country singlets but so far no responses to our offers of NunesBucks.
Which companies would you like to see on Orane uniforms next year?
