After his goal in Bayern Munich’s emphatic 8-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg to kick off the new year for the Bundesliga champions, Harry Kane has now tallied 31 goals across all competitions so far this season, 20 of which have come in the German top flight. While the England skipper knows it could still be a bit of a stretch, he is on pace to come close to Robert Lewandowski’s single season record of 41 goals with 16 matches left in the Bundesliga and he’s also in the race for this season’s European Golden
Boot.
As things currently stand, Kane’s contract at Bayern runs through June 2027, but the club has signaled that they have every intention of offering him a new deal at some point before this summer’s World Cup. They’re still trying to figure out if they want to extend his deal through 2028 or 2029, but they certainly want to have him put pen to paper to extend his stay beyond 2027.
Per information from Kicker’s Georg Holzner and Frank Linkesch (via @iMiaSanMia), the first informal exchanges between Kane and Bayern with regards to a new deal have already taken place and more concrete talks are expected to occur soon. The striker is worth his weight in gold even as he closes in on 33 years of age, so there will be a lot of financial figures and details that will have to be worked out, but Bayern wants to be proactive in their planning for their attacking line, both with Kane in the squad and for the future.
In addition to wanting to secure a new deal with Kane, Bayern want to have overall clarity in the striker’s position, so they want to look at options in the transfer market for potential replacements for Nicolas Jackson, who has been on loan from Chelsea this season. Once Jackson is back from the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, there will certainly be chances given to him by Vincent Kompany as Bayern pushes across all three fronts, but it has become abundantly clear the club does not plan on purchasing him from Chelsea on a permanent basis after the loan spell is up when this season concludes.
With Jackson’s fate seemingly decided already, unless there are drastic changes to what the understanding is now, Bayern need to try to secure a secondary striker to Kane while they simultaneously work on a new deal for him, Dayot Upamecano, and Serge Gnabry.
