Every World Cup produces a few surprise packages, but it also leaves fans wondering what happened to some of the tournament’s biggest names. With the group stage nearly complete, there are several high-profile nations that have fallen well short of expectations.
Spain looked sluggish in its opening scoreless draw against Cape Verde and, despite bouncing back with a convincing win over Saudi Arabia before edging Uruguay, has not consistently looked like the dominant side many expected. There is still
time to build momentum, but the performances have been far from convincing.
Portugal also entered the tournament with lofty expectations, yet a frustrating draw against DR Congo raised questions about the team’s consistency. A 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan restored confidence, but the toughest test of the group still awaits, leaving plenty to prove.
Türkiye has been another disappointment. Consecutive losses to Australia and Paraguay put the team in a difficult position before a spirited win over the United States. While that result kept hope alive, many expected Türkiye to challenge for first place rather than scramble to stay in contention.
Belgium has arguably been one of the biggest letdowns. Draws against Egypt and Iran have left the Red Devils searching for their first victory, and the pressure is firmly on heading into their final group match. A squad with this much talent should be producing much more.
Then there is Uruguay. Draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, followed by a narrow loss to Spain, have left La Celeste well below expectations. With players capable of competing against anyone, the lack of cutting edge has been surprising.
What do you think? Which team has been the biggest disappointment of the World Cup so far? Is it Spain, Portugal, Türkiye, Belgium, Uruguay, or another nation entirely? Let us know your pick and why in the comments!
