The next Syracuse Orange football season is still months away, but fans planning their fall trip to the JMA Wireless Dome should take note of a pair of confirmed dates for some of the team’s 2026 home games.
Syracuse University recently announced the official dates for Family and Homecoming Weekends, which usually have a home football game coinciding with those celebrations.
Family Weekend will take place between October 16 and October 18, which is when Syracuse will take on the Louisville Cardinals
at the Dome on Saturday October 17th. . Homecoming Weekend runs from November 6 to November 8. Syracuse will play the Clemson Tigers that weekend on either Friday, November 6 or Saturday, November 7.
At least among the TNIAAM team, the news is definitely leading to some discussion, at least among our staff.
The big takeaway is the Clemson game being the game for Homecoming Weekend.
On one hand, Clemson is the marquee ACC of the 2026 home slate, and because the Notre Dame game does fall on the second weekend of SU’s Thanksgiving break, that would make it a poor Homecoming choice. The Clemson game is the perfect storm of students being on campus, yet also right in the thick of the football season and with the Upstate New York weather being tolerable.
That said, despite some dwindling attendance numbers recently, hosting Clemson has historically seen large crowds. Is there a case it makes more sense to have the Tigers as a stand-alone game, which would theoretically draws a sizable crowd?
Going down this path, the other potential candidates (assuming the Louisville game stays as the Family Weekend game) would have been New Hampshire (September 5), California (September 12), SMU (October 30 or 31) and Notre Dame (November 28).
Looking at those options, New Hampshire and California are definitely in the “no” category (opponent isn’t “attractive” and it’s too early in the calendar). Again, Notre Dame falls too late in the calendar. That only leaves SMU on the board.
For Syracuse, “Halloweekend” is notoriously a very active weekend on the University Hill. Regardless of what day the game could’ve been on, there would be a big crowd, at least in theory.
On the flip side, keep in mind for Syracuse’s latest home football game that was on a Friday night and on Halloween, it also happened to be the team’s lowest-attended game at the Dome up until that point (the only other home matchup left was against Boston College). Part of that fact is context-dependent considering where the Orange were at this point in the 2025 season, but still, something at least worth bringing up.
As for Family Weekend, choosing Louisville is reasonable. Family Weekend usually never falls on Halloweekend (for o’plenty of reasons). It isn’t a game that screams “there will be a large crowd,” but maybe that was the point with this pick? Maybe there’s a case to have Family Weekend super early (likely for the Cal game), but usually, it’s happened in October and not the second game of the football season.
The other big takeaway from these confirmed dates is Syracuse having just one game between mid-September and Halloweekend. It definitely left little options on the table to choose from. Ditto for the bye week being so early in the year. If the bye was later, maybe SMU becomes a candidate for Family Weekend.
Overall, this is all just some general thoughts. How do you feel about the confirmed games happening on Family and Homecoming Weekends? What would be your ideal picks?
