Before we get to the football coverage, there was more news about the 5th year players stuff yesterday, and really all week.
The biggest news happened while the Tigers were dispensing of the Golden Lions, a Louisiana judge sided with the players, and it looks like LSU is now going to sign guys who were in camps with NFL teams.
The players, after the ruling, stated they were planning on being added to the LSU roster today. LSU plays Clemson on Saturday night, and rosters are due today.

No so much a response
to this ruling, but the SEC has opted to sue Lane Kiffin and LSU in Federal Court in Alabama. This whole scene is truly just amazing, I’m not even mad, I’m impressed.
The SEC has endured and thrived for nearly a century because its members have adhered to that common set of rules, which each member institution, and every coach at those institutions, has agreed to follow,” the SEC’s federal lawsuit said. “Among the most fundamental of those rules are the longstanding provisions that prohibit individuals who have entered a professional draft, signed professional contracts, or been rostered on a professional athletics team from returning to compete in college athletics (the “Professionalism Rules”).
“These rules are built upon an essential principle: college athletics is reserved for students who are actively pursuing an education while competing for their universities. The Professionalism Rules preserve competitive fairness, protect opportunities for high school students and current college athletes, and maintain the distinction between college and professional sports.”
Honestly, this approach is one of the reasons I haven’t really addressed the report that Mizzou Hoops has signed former DePaul guard C.J. Gunn. We were able to quickly confirm Gunn was enrolled and on the team, awaiting medical clearance. But Gunn’s path towards eligibility is not as clear as Mark Mitchell’s, for the simple reason he signed with a pro team in Canada and played in a few games. Gunn signed with the Calgary Surge, played in two games, scored 5 points, and then he was cut.
I don’t see Gunn’s play in Canada as any different from the guys who were in NFL training camps.
Mark Mitchell played in the Summer League, but never signed a contract. If any 5th year players are allowed to play, Mark should be in the clear. But Gunn? I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like the SEC is relenting on the professional side of things. They didn’t relent on the intra-conference transfer rule, which led Mitchell to re-upping at Missouri.
As always we’ll see what happens.

Batoon is known as a guy who doesn’t quite fit the mold of a venomous, fiery SEC defensive personality. He prefers to work from a place of tranquility, trading volume for serenity in the booth. Maybe that will make all the difference between defensive hiccups being isolated to the early going and potentially seeing those lapses dwell into the latter autumn Saturdays. At best, though, you’d have to qualify that as speculation.
Maybe the most underrated hire of the Drink era has been Batoon.
