Nik Bonitto is coming off a career season.
The Denver Broncos edge totaled 14 sacks, finished fourth in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting, and went to his first Pro Bowl. It’s Bonitto’s second straight season of double-digit sacks.
In the win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, he was a game-wrecker, tallying two forced fumbles, including a strip sack of Josh Allen.
Bonitto is now in the discussion as one of the top pass rushers in the NFL.
Now, he wants to get even better.
As Bonitto said to the Broncos website on Thursday:
“All facets. I still have a lot of room to grow in my game — in the run and in the pass. Just keep trying to fine-tune these things, keep looking at other guys around the league that are doing it at a high level and seeing how I can put it into my game to continue to be the best player I know I can be.”
What gives Bonitto the confidence is the success he had in the win over the Bills. How could it not? He was a huge reason Denver recorded one of the best wins in franchise history.
“It’s obviously great when you can do it in the regular season,” Bonitto said Thursday to the Broncos website. But doing it in the postseason in those big type of moments, it gives you that confidence to know you’re supposed to be there and you can make those types of plays on big stages.”
As Bonitto and Denver look to take the next step after finishing one game away from the Super Bowl, Bonitto will play a key role in making that come to life. He’s one of the leaders on defense and has put himself in the discussion as one of the best edge rushers in the NFL.
If Bonitto is able to take his game to another level this season, that makes the Broncos defense better and the team. His mindset will force his teammates to match his commitment and desire. It’s exactly what a team needs looking to build off a season like Denver just had.
“I’m really excited,” Bonitto said to the team website. “Especially how the season ended, I know everybody’s champing at the bit to get the pads back on and compete against each other these next couple months. It’s going to be real fun for sure.”
