With the ongoing FIFA World Cup taking place here in the U.S, there have been plenty of conversations surrounding our top athletes and the sports they choose to play. Especially now that the United States Men’s team has been eliminated.
To begin, I want to state that I have no real knowledge of soccer. Although I am currently trying to become more of a fan. I have picked Arsenal as my Premier League club. My wife played throughout high school, and her brother played in college. I have also been watching
as much of this year’s World Cup as possible with a one-year-old running around the house. And naturally, watching all of this soccer got me thinking about football, and how some of the skills we see in today’s game would translate to the most popular sport on the planet.
That brings us to today’s question of the day—which Detroit Lions player would be the best at soccer if they had gone in that direction as a young athlete?
My answer: For obvious reasons, I think the easy answer would be Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. We know he at least played it in his youth, before ultimately going with football as his main sport as he came of age. However, if he were to have gone with soccer, that may have ended up working out pretty nicely, too. Receivers like St. Brown have great footwork, elite speed and short-area quickness, and enough strength to push smaller athletes around on the soccer field.
Another option that I considered was running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Again, elite physical tools, great vision, and ability to set up blocks. Those kind of gifts translate to just about every sport there is.
What about you? Which current Lions player do you think would have made the best soccer player if they chose that route? Let us know in the comments below.
