SV Elversberg’s first season in the Bundesliga has thus far been a complete success, winning both of their opening fixtures to sit near the top of the table, at the time of writing. One negative for the small club situated in Saarland, though, is that head coach Vincent Wagner received a controversial red card in their most recent match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which was set to rule him out of their huge clash against Bayern Munich. First he received a yellow card in the 45th minute of the match for entering
the field without permission and received his second booking immediately after the half-time whistle for unsporting behavior.
However, as Bundesliga.com captured, Elversberg appealed the red card. The first appeal was rejected, but the club launched a second appeal. This time, DFB’s sporting tribunal upheld the appeal in a decision on Friday, which will make Wagner available again for this weekend’s match. Stephan Oberholz, chairman of the DFB sports tribunal, had this to say.
“During the oral hearing, referee Petersen stated for the first time that his perception of the incident had been incorrect and that he had misjudged the situation. We therefore had to determine whether that error was an obvious one,” Oberholz said. “Having reviewed new footage from the scouting feed, we are convinced that coach Wagner clearly entered the pitch solely to communicate with his players and was not moving towards the referee. Against that background, an exception could be made and the automatic suspension lifted.”
Elversberg will be back at full strength for their clash against Bayern as the Bavarians look to topple the early upstarts.
