There’s general agreement that the Kansas City Chiefs’ next contract priority should be extending cornerback Trent McDuffie, who is entering his fourth NFL season. The club has already exercised its option to keep the former first-round pick through 2026, which will cost $13.6 million against the salary cap. A contract extension could easily reduce that impact for next year, when the team will have several salary-cap problems to navigate.
Unfortunately, just $2.6 million of his $4.4 million cap hit
in 2025 comes from his salary. This means there is little room for general manager Brett Veach to create much cap relief for the current season, when we now estimate the team has only $3.1 million in cap space — in large part because the team now has eight players on its Reseerve/Injured list. That substantiallty reduces the pressure on Veach to get an extension done before the season gets under way against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday.
For his part, McDuffie remains unconcerned about it.
“I feel like moving forward now, even, it’s really just about the season and about the game,” the cornerback told reporters on Sunday. “I’m not too worried about the contract or anything like that… Let’s just go out there and have a great year this year.”
