Barcelona defender Álvaro Cortés is set to join Belgian side Royal Antwerp in a €3 million deal as the center-back is set for regular playing time, and Hansi Flick explained the reasons for his departure.
The coach spoke to the press on Sunday and talked about the importance of Cortés playing week in and week out, something he wouldn’t be able to offer the young center-back at Barça this season. Flick also suggested Barça will be in the market looking for a replacement.
“This relates to what I said
at the beginning. We’re always looking at what we can do, right up until the end of the transfer window. Álvaro has taken a step forward, but we have to analyze the situation. It’s great for him to be playing at the highest level in another league at this age. He’s ready and can improve there. Here, he might not get the playing time he needs. Playing for Barça B isn’t an option. It was better for him to play at another club and see what happens.”
Cortés’ departure is a bit of a surprise given how highly Flick has always spoken of the youngster, but Barça will have a buy-back clause in the deal with Antwerp allowing them to bring Cortés back at a reasonable price if they choose.
