The headlines for Liverpool this week on the injury front have all surrounded striker Alexander Isak, who is expected to face a minimum two to three month recovery from a broken leg following a horror
tackle by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven during last Saturday’s Premier League clash.
However, manager Arne Slot is dealing with plenty of injury issues beyond Isak, with a slew of players either out or working their way back or playing but not yet fully match fit, with Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo already entirely ruled out for Liverpool’s upcoming match against Wolves next Saturday.
On a slightly more positive note, the manager currently sees right back Conor Bradley and forward Cody Gakpo as both being 50:50 to be available for the first team back following the team’s brief Christmas break, while Florian Wirtz is expected to be in the lineup and will be likely to start.
“Conor will be 50-50,” Slot noted at his pre-match press conference. He’s not training with us today, not tomorrow, so Friday we will see exactly where he is and if he can be in the squad for the weekend, and Cody is a bit similar to Conor but Joe won’t be available and Wata won’t be available.
“In an ideal world I could have maybe rested [Florian Wirtz] a little bit more so far but he will be there for us again on Saturday, and he is another example I think of a player who has had to play a lot but he is maybe now adjusting better and better and better to playing in the Premier League.”
While it won’t much help for a player like Isak who is ruled out for months rather than weeks or days, for many of Liverpool’s other injured players a relatively light Christmas schedule with a full week off before last Saturday’s game against Spurs and another before they face Wolves is certainly helpful.
After their upcoming match on the weekend, though, things get busy again in a hurry with Leeds up the following Thursday and two games a week for the foreseeable future as their FA Cup campaign kicks off and they return to Europe for the end of the league phase and a likely place in the knockouts.
