Sunderland are set to enhance their backroom recruitment operation by appointing highly experienced Italian Matteo Serra to a senior role.
Serra arrives on Wearside from Greek top-tier club PAOK Salonika, where he most recently served as head of recruitment. He’ll be stepping into a vital and highly specific position at the Academy of Light — overseeing player exits and loan management.
Who is Matteo Serra?
The 42-year-old Italian is a highly experienced recruitment and scouting specialist who’s steadily built a strong
reputation as an elite talent identifier across Europe, working with some of the biggest clubs in Italy and France before moving to Greece.
The son of former Cagliari sporting director Luciano Serra, football administration runs in his blood; growing up immersed in the inner workings of Italian football, he’s since developed his own elite continental pedigree at several top-tier European clubs.
His resume includes scouting and recruitment positions at Juventus, PSG and Lille, as well as a stint as chief scout for Spezia Calcio, where he unearthed Jakub Kiwior, who later signed a £25 million deal with Arsenal within eighteen months of joining the club. Serra also signed rumoured Sunderland target Emil Holm for Spezia, and the club eventually sold him to Bologna for a substantial profit.
Serra was also part of the recruitment team at Lille, who signed the likes of Sven Botman and Jonathan David and created the Ligue 1-winning side that eventually usurped PSG at the top of French football.
Serra’s Sunderland role: A focus on departures
Serra has been brought in to oversee outgoings.
Sunderland’s squad has become heavy with senior figures that don’t fit into head coach Régis Le Bris’ tactical plans. These include Nazariy Rusyn, Timothée Pembélé , Abdoullah Ba, and Alan Browne, and offloading these high earners and surplus talent will help the club to manage its wage bill and remain financially nimble.
Serra will also tasked with overseeing the development pathways of players sent out on loan.
At a club built around the recruitment and development of elite young talent, managing loans effectively is vital; Serra’s job is to ensure younger prospects are sent to the right clubs to gain valuable first-team minutes, preserving or raising their future market values.
Reducing the current wage bill not only allows for greater financial flexibility for incoming signings, but it’s also important for balancing the books.
Trimming the wage bill becomes even more critical as the Premier League implements its new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) system, which replaces the older Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The verdict
By having a talented and well-established operator in a highly specialised role that navigates the complex numbers and logistics of player departures and loans, Florent Ghisolfi will be free to focus strictly on “quality over quantity” for incoming transfers as we prepare for our upcoming Premier League and Europa League campaigns.
This appointment looks be the first among what we can anticipate to be a number of changes at the Academy of Light this summer, as both Ghisolfi and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus look to enhance the club’s operating model following key departures.
