Bayern Munich experienced a mix of old and new school on the transfer market this summer, with a high profile pursuit of a Bundesliga star, Florian Wirtz, followed by a more modern approach — of going right down a list of players until finding a match.
Sport Bild detailed the complement of approaches (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):
There are two ways of doing business at Bayern. The old way is to have a top target, the only one you want for a particular position, like Florian Wirtz. You go all in, and,
normally, Bayern are successful in this approach. That’s the traditional approach of the bosses at FC Bayern. Max Eberl, however, has a different, more modern approach. That’s to commit to a shortlist and work through it until you find a player who fits the bill and is willing to join. First on the list was Nico Williams, then there was Jamie Gittens, and then Luis Díaz. But, the list didn’t die with Díaz; there were also players beyond the Colombian in case a deal didn’t work out. Malick Fofana of Lyon was after Díaz on the list and will still be interesting for Bayern in the future [@cfbayern]
BFW Analysis
That all makes sense, from the classic Bayern try at getting the hottest German men’s national team superstar…and probably having a good shot if not for a persuasive pitch from Liverpool coach Arne Slot. However…
Ahead of Luis Díaz? All of those guys? That’s going to earn a raised eyebrow from this corner.
