The Carolina Hurricanes fell, 5-1, to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night on the road.
Trying to build momentum off Saturday’s win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, Brandon Bussi struggled in his third consecutive loss. The Blue Jackets outshot the Canes 29 to 27. Carolina had only 1 power play while Columbus stacked up five.
After a strong start for the Canes, Seth Jarvis was called for a double minor after replay review showed a high sticking on Columbus’ Zach Werenski.
It didn’t take long for
the Blue Jackets to capitalize, with Mason Marchment beating Brandon Bussi from the slot to take a 1-0 lead.
Charlie Coyle added Columbus’ second power play goal of the game on a pass from Adam Fantilli with less than a minute remaining in the first period.
The Blue Jackets outshot the Canes 11-6 in the first 20 minutes, and heading into the second, Carolina found themselves down 2-0.
Bussi came up with multiple big saves in the first four minutes of the second period, including a breakaway denial on Mathieu Olivier.
Newly acquired Nicolas Deslaurier, making his Hurricanes debut, dropped the gloves with Olivier at center ice in a heavyweight tilt. With Carlina out of sorts and down two goals, Deslaurier attempted to get the momentum back.
Frustrations continued to boil over for the Canes, with Sebastian Aho getting into it with Dante Fabbro in front of the net.
On the ensuing four-on-four, Andrei Svechnikov deked Jet Greaves to find the back of the net and put Carolina on the board, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Columbus responded when Bussi fell behind the net trying to play the puck, and even though Alexander Nikishin made an initial diving save, Danton Heinen made no mistake on the rebound to take a 3-1 lead.
Denton Mateychuk piled on with another goal 34 seconds later to extend the Blue Jackets’ lead to 4-1. On the first 20 shots, Bussi allowed four goals.
To begin the third period, Jarvis was called for his second double minor high sticking penalty of the game.
Despite killing off the penalty, the Blue Jackets tallied the only goal of the third period courtesy of Olivier. No one was around Olivier in front of the net who just had to beat Bussi to put Columbus up 5-1.
Carolina will take the ice against the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow at 7 PM, hoping to bounce back.
