I don’t want to talk too much about last night. The Yankees essentially set their meager chances for the AL East on fire in a gross loss, and the only thing left to do is push for the first Wild Card and ensure that three-game series is in the Bronx. They have a rather lopsided pitching matchup tonight, and while we learned on Monday you can’t look past any team, one would bet on New York based on the starters alone.
Cam Schlittler rebounded brilliantly after his bad start facing Toronto, going six
innings and allowing just a single run last week against Detroit. He’s now allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts, rounding into form as a likely member of the postseason rotation. The Twins were one of those starts, as Schlittler threw five innings of two-hit, one-run ball against the Twinkies in New York about a month ago. A repeat performance would go a long way to ending this little two-game skid the team is on.
Zebby Matthews counters for Minnesota, making the 15th start of his Major League career. He hasn’t had the thriving debut of his opponent, with a 5.06 ERA that looks ugly, but strong strikeout numbers mean his FIP and xFIP are a run and a half lower than that. The big problem with Zebby has been giving up home runs, but he needn’t worry, the Yankees don’t have much power hitting.
We get pretty close to the A lineup today, with Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge left to right in the outfield, and Ben Rice at first base. Anthony Volpe returns to shortstop and bats ninth which…is whatever. The org likes their kid.
