Good morning, baseball fans!
As many of you may already know, San Francisco was named as one of the first four cities to be getting a Women’s Professional Baseball League team, which is really exciting!
I’m looking forward to adding coverage of the new team to our regularly scheduled San Francisco Giants coverage. We are the home of San Francisco baseball on SBNation, after all.
Here’s an update on where things stand so far. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and New York are the first cities to be named for the new league, which is set to have its inaugural season in 2026. Over the summer, more than 600 players participated in tryouts at Nationals Park in hopes of becoming one of the 120+ players who will be eligible for the draft.
The draft is set to take place on November 20th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT, streaming live on the WPBL’s Instagram, YouTube and TikTok accounts, with live updates available on the WPBL website.
The draft is set to consist of six rounds of 20 picks each, with each team getting five picks per round. The order will be a random draw, and then proceed in a snake format (where the last team to pick goes first in the next order) until each team has drafted 30 players.
Two players to keep an eye on are Mo’Ne Davis, who fans may remember from her superstar performance in the Little League World Series; and Kelsie Whitmore, who fans may have seen playing with the Savannah Bananas. Each will easily become the face of their new franchise, and I’m hoping San Francisco gets an early enough pick to bring them here.
Right now, there isn’t a ton of information about what the teams will be called, where they will play, etc., but more information is expected to come out as we get closer to the draft. So keep an eye on our BPs, as that is where I plan to add coverage for the new team.
