Over the past few weeks, Bayern Munich has been considered the leader on a potential transfer for Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon. Now, though, that status might have changed per multiple reports as FC Barcelona has swept into the lead.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano issued a post on X with news on FC Barcelona’s involvement:
🚨🔵🔴 Barcelona have been mentioning Anthony Gordon’s name in several meetings over recent days.
As reported in last night’s video, he’s high on Barça list and talks
on — set to leave Newcastle in any case this summer.
Romano checked in again with additional information:
🚨 Barcelona are in direct club to club talks with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon.
The player’s keen on the move but more clubs are also on it.
This was the reason of Deco’s mission to the UK, as @mundodeportivo reports.
⚠️ Bayern and Premier League clubs are also keen.
Marca journalist Matteo Moretto backed up Romano’s report and expanded on Barca’s interest in Gordon:
Barcelona has maintained recent contacts with Newcastle regarding Anthony Gordon.
Negotiations underway between the clubs.
Barça was in England precisely for that reason, as @mundodeportivo reported earlier.
Laporta, Deco, and Flick are convinced that the Englishman could be a signing with great potential for the club.
Gordon has also received offers from other top Premier League clubs and Bayern Munich, but he has given priority to Barcelona.
Newcastle has put Gordon on the market and is prepared for his departure.
Finally, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope (via @iMiaSanMia) checked in to say that FC Barcelona is now ahead of Bayern Munich in the race for Gordon:
Barcelona have moved ahead of Bayern in the race to sign Anthony Gordon. Barça and Newcastle chiefs are now discussing the make-up of a deal, with the total package including add-ons edging towards £80million.
Bayern’s valuation is lower and, while their interest remains strong, it is Barcelona who are attempting to advance talks. Gordon’s representatives have spoken to both Barça and Bayern. The framework of personal terms with Bayern has been in place for several weeks.
Sources say Barça would have to sell players in order to be able to register Gordon, but the finances of a transfer are achievable. Those close to the deal are hopeful of progress before the World Cup.
BFW Commentary
FC Barcelona has been rumored to be on the periphery of this pursuit for a while, so it is no surprise to see the Catalans get more heavily involved. Now though, the real competition begins as Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Liverpool, and Arsenal are all considered to have interested in Gordon.
If this turns into a bidding war, expect Bayern Munich to exit the proceedings rather quickly and move on to another target. Who that might be is a mystery at the moment.
