Shortly after Oba Femi successfully defended his NXT championship in the main event of Heatwave, defeating Je’Von Evans in one of the best NXT matches of the year, Ricky Saints hit the scene to establish himself as the next top contender. They didn’t book the match right away, however.
Instead, they opened this week’s episode of NXT television with Saints again trying to establish himself but being met by Josh Briggs attempting to dispute his status. General Manager Ava was out next and her solution
was, well, hilarious to say the least.
She said Evans still hadn’t been heard from since he lost to Femi, so she was just going to go ahead and book these two in a number one contender match tonight, with the winner advancing to No Mercy on Sept. 27 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Snooze you lose, Je’Von! Hope you’re okay, though (I guess)!
Meanwhile, Briggs looked good, maybe as good as he ever has, but it was Saints who used a tornado DDT to score the pinfall and the victory. That sets up the main event of the next big PLE: The Ruler vs. The Revolution.
The updated No Mercy match card:
- NXT Men’s Championship: Oba Femi (c) vs. Ricky Saints
- NXT Women’s Championship: Jacy Jayne (c) vs. Lola Vice
- NXT Women’s Speed Championship: Sol Ruca (c) vs. TBD
