Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was back at practice for Tuesday’s voluntary organized team activities, despite Brown County continuing to investigate potential charges related to a domestic abuse case. Last Wednesday was the Packers’ first media-open OTAs, which happened to fall on the same day that Jacobs was released from jail after the district attorney requested a further investigation — stating, “there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist.”
Last week, head coach
Matt LaFleur referred to the Packers’ statement, which essentially boiled down to “we’re aware of the situation,” in his pre-practice press conference. This week, he stated that “business as usual” on the Jacobs front, at least on the field.
Under LaFleur, the Packers have tended to have two joint practices with teams in the preseason, so it’s interesting that Green Bay only believes they’re going to have one joint practice this summer. Maybe this means that the starters will get more time in the preseason, as LaFleur’s Packers have generally used joint practices for the starters and preseason games for the backups to get live reps.
Things seem to be trending in a positive direction from a health standpoint in Green Bay. On Wednesday, the Packers were down to just three running backs in team drills: Chris Brooks, Pierre Strong Jr. and Jaden Nixon. Now, Josh Jacobs, MarShawn Lloyd and Damien Martinez have returned to the rotation.
This isn’t much of a surprise, as Bo Melton went from being listed as a cornerback to receiver after last week’s practice, when he spent the entire time with the offensive side of the ball.
Now this is interesting. With Zach Tom out with his patellar tendon recovery, Anthony Belton was kicked out to tackle today, opening up a spot for the next man up at guard. That next man was rookie fifth-round pick Jager Burton. It sure seems like the Packers are trying to get their rookies involved more early on than in previous years.
Again, more rookies got looks with the first-team defense, too. Chris McClellan got the “start” at nose tackle in team drills with Devonte Wyatt, dealing with an ankle injury, out of the lineup. The Packers also debuted a Penny (5-1) defense, where Edgerrin Cooper played the second edge rushing position opposite of Lukas Van Ness. Brandon Cisse, Green Bay’s top pick of the 2026 draft, also rotated in as an outside cornerback opposite of Keisean Nixon in practice.
Not a great day for the Packers’ rookie kicker, who went 4 of 8 on field goal attempts. He was 7 of 8 on Wednesday, bringing his total kicks (including the extra pointer) to 12 of 17.
For those of you hoping that Keisean Nixon would jump up the depth chart as a kick returner in 2026, this is probably a wet blanket. It was Savion Williams and practice squad receiver Jakobie Keeney-James who replaced Skyy Moore’s reps today, as Moore was held out of action.
