The first full day of the 2026 MLB season is in the books, and it couldn’t have gone much better for the Phillies.
They won 5-3, got big home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm, got an ace like performance from Cristopher Sánchez, saw Justin Crawford collect two hits, and saw Jhoan Duran come in to clean up a late mess in the ninth. Sure, there were some negatives, such as Kyle Backhus allowing three runs in just one third of an inning and Bryce Harper going 0-4 with two strikeouts, but there were many
more positives than negatives.
Around the rest of baseball, Paul Skenes got rocked for five runs and didn’t escape the first inning against the Mets, the Brewers walloped the White Sox 14-2, and the Angels shut out the Astros. Of course, it was only the first game of a 162-game season, so there is virtually nothing to gleam from any of these results.
But that isn’t going to stop from letting your imaginations run wild. So, what are your overreactions to Opening Day? Is Alec Bohm finally finding another level? Is this the year Sánchez captures a Cy Young award? Are Bryce Harper and Paul Skenes broken? Are the new look Mets a bigger threat than was considered? Is the Brewers offense better than we thought? Let’s go wild and make sweeping judgements from the first day of the season.
