We’ve made it to the weekend, and now that we’re a full week into November the holiday season is fast approaching. I’m personally brushing up on some fun fall recipes to have on hand for a Friendsgiving later in the month, which is how you know we’re fully into offseason mode when baking is the lede we’re going with. To be fair, it’s not like we’re anticipating much of a hot stove in the baseball sense with the lockout about to freeze transactions once the calendar turns over to December. The league
is still rolling out award nominations, with the Silver Sluggers the most recent batch to be announced, and we’ve got a few weeks to go until we know who will be tendered a contract among arbitration-eligible players and who will accept their qualifying offers.
It’ll be a quiet day as we get your morning started. Andrés starts us off with his second look at a player on the fringes of the Yankees’ roster in Luis Gil and whether the Yankees should cut bait with him entirely. Jonathan looks back at Fernando Cruz’s season and hands out our next report card, and then John takes us through James Paxton’s career on his 38th birthday. Later on in the afternoon, I’ll return to answer your latest questions from the mailbag.
Questions/Prompts:
1. Would Ben Rice have better odds of winning a Silver Slugger had he stuck around at first base long-term this season and gone up against Pete Alonso instead of Yordan Alvarez, or is it a moot point?
2. What’s a random Yankee from the 2010s that you think about from time to time? (I’m picking Nathan Eovaldi personally, he’s been around the block for a while now but his Yankees days feel like a forgotten part of his career.)
