Germany’s women’s national team opened its World Cup Qualifying campaign in style with a 5-0 win over Slovenia on Tuesday.
It was a comprehensive performance that could have resulted in even more goals.
Vivien Endemann got things going right away in the sixth minute with a clever off-the-shoulder run that Linda Dallmann spotted from midfield. The winger, operating on the accustomed flank of the injured Klara Bühl, found herself all alone in the box with defenders trailing behind and finished calmly
with a left-foot slotted ball through the keeper’s legs.
Barely five minutes later, Endemann turned supplier, shimmying away with a fake shot from the edge of the box before squaring to Elisa Senß centrally. Senß in turn produced a sensational finish that left the keeper rooted to the spot.
A succession of near misses kept the score at 2-0 heading into the half, with Germany keeper Ann-Katrin Berger called into action as well to preserve the advantage.
But minutes into the restart, Senß sent a cutting ball into the box for Bayern Munich’s Linda Dallmann, and the attacking midfielder finished from close range at a narrow angle. Shortly after, debutant Larissa Mühlhaus latched on to a deflected ball in the box to finish acrobatically and emphatically into the top corner for Germany’s fourth. Finally, just after the 70th minute, newly minted Manchester United striker Lea Schüller split the center-backs with a run into the box and was found by Endemann for the exclamation mark to the impressive day.
