Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya speaks his thoughts on potential next fights for his star, Ryan Garcia. The latest talk from Ryan has been a supposed title defense against Floyd Mayweather, but whether or not that’s actually a realistic fight to happen, De La Hoya actually gives Floyd a good shot to win that fight. Here’s some of what he had to say on that fight and more.
On the talk of Ryan vs Floyd
“It’s almost like a 50/50 fight, to me” De La Hoya said of a Garcia vs Mayweather matchup. “Because Mayweather has the [savvy],
he has the IQ inside the ring to just play with Ryan if he wanted to. So it’s a very interesting fight. And Ryan, he’s all over the map. He’s unconventional punching machine, so I feel that fight, if it happens, it would be pretty interesting. I’m pretty sure Netflix would pick it up and do some kind of four-part docuseries on it. So, yeah, it would be interesting.”
On a Ryan vs Teofimo fight
“That’s a more realistic fight that can take place next. Whether it’s February or Cinco de Mayo weekend, I like that for Vegas at the T-Mobile. Would be a huge fight. I think Ryan, capturing the world title and knocking out Conor Benn the way he had to knock him out, did good for himself. And Teo, he proved himself against Rolly who beat Ryan. So that should be an interesting fight when and if it happens.”
On which promoter annoys him most
“Dana White, obviously…Eddie [Hearn], to me now, he’s like funny. He’s just funny.”
On Shakur Stevenson leaving Zuffa
“I’m going to have a field day [talking about that] when the time is right…Shakur Stevenson, not even fighting for Zuffa. I mean, how embarrassing is that? He didn’t have a fight with Zuffa. I’m not understanding how it worked because Dana’s not one just to release fighters like that, because they ask for their release…Shakur not even fighting for Zuffa was a huge embarrassment for the company.”
