Top rumor of the day: Roman Reigns’ world title challenger on Raw in Mexico City
Following WWE’s announcement that there will be a tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ world title challenger on the Sept. 14 episode of Raw in Mexico City, there has been a lot of talk about which luchador will be the chosen one for that major spot. Could it be former Intercontinental Champion Penta? What about LA Knight wearing a luchador mask as El LA Knight?
For whatever it’s worth, Wrestling Observer Live’s Bryan Alvarez indicates that WWE’s current plan is for El Grande Americano (aka Ludwig Kaiser) to win the tournament and challenge Reigns in Mexico City next month. However, Alvarez adds the caveat that El Grande vs. Reigns is “unconfirmed and not locked in.”
Americano is currently scheduled to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship at TripleMania 34, which takes place right before Raw in Mexico City. That means he could be walking into the Mexico City Raw as the brand new AAA Mega Champion for this rumored title match against Reigns.

- During an interview with Joel Pearl and Fightful Overbooked, Samoa Joe didn’t rule out returning to AEW in time for All In at Wembley Stadium at the end of this month. It sounds like he’s close to the end of production for Twisted Metal.
- When asked about Baron Corbin not having a run in AEW before returning to WWE, PWInsider’s Dave Scherer suggested that AEW’s in-ring style being “more dangerous than WWE” could have been a factor, because that is “a big turn off to a lot of wrestlers.”
- Former WWE star Joe Gacy told Casa D-18 Studios that Alexa Bliss joining the Wyatt Sicks “was always supposed to happen eventually,” going back to the first meeting about the group’s creative direction. He never heard about anyone else potentially joining the faction.
- When asked about Eddie Kingston’s return to AEW programming for the Continental Cup, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that “there’s a reason” why Eddie has been stuck on ROH in recent months. He didn’t specify what that reason is, but talked as if it’s related to Eddie’s lack of mobility after coming back from a horrific broken leg.
