On paper, a goalless draw away to Preston North End on a midweek evening hardly represented a disastrous result for a Sunderland side that had made such an impressive start to the 2024/2025 campaign.
However, there was a growing sense of frustration among supporters following a below-par performance at Deepdale, with head coach Régis Le Bris coming under some scrutiny for a team selection that ultimately failed to deliver the desired results.
Much of the criticism centred on the Frenchman’s decision
to leave out two of Sunderland’s standout performers of the season — Patrick Roberts and Romaine Mundle — in favour of Tommy Watson and Aaron Connolly, both of whom were handed their first league starts for the club.
It was a bold call from Le Bris, particularly given the attacking threat Roberts and Mundle had provided during Sunderland’s impressive opening months of the campaign. Unfortunately for the head coach, his gamble failed to pay off as the Black Cats struggled to find any real rhythm or fluency in the final third.
Neither Watson nor Connolly managed to make a significant impression, although the latter came closest to breaking the deadlock when he was denied his first Sunderland goal by a fine close-range save from Freddie Woodman following some excellent work by Trai Hume — yet that this represented arguably Sunderland’s best opportunity of the evening spoke volumes about the nature of the contest.
It was a largely forgettable affair in which clear-cut chances were at a premium, with Sunderland’s defensive unit once again doing much of the heavy lifting to ensure that the visitors returned to Wearside with something to show for their efforts.
Unsurprisingly, Le Bris faced questions afterwards about whether his decision to make such significant changes had hindered his side’s chances of securing all three points.
However, the Frenchman remained steadfast in his belief that managing the demands of a gruelling Championship campaign required more than simply relying on the same starting eleven every week.
It’s a long league with many games in a week.
We have to manage the team and squad and give opportunities to other players. We need all our players in the best shape.
When we start without Patrick, it’s very important to keep the ball and give time to the others.
We know it’s a big strength that we miss for sure but it was expected that the last thirty minutes was for him and we changed the dynamic of the game at the moment. I repeat, we need a big squad and everyone playing their part.
There were, of course, mitigating circumstances for Le Bris to contend with, not least the absence of the influential Jobe Bellingham, who was serving a suspension following his red card against Queens Park Rangers just days earlier.
The midfielder had been an integral part of Sunderland’s early-season success and his absence was another significant blow to a side attempting to maintain the relentless standards they’d set during the opening months of the campaign.
Nevertheless, the stalemate at Deepdale represented a second successive goalless draw on the road, and while Sunderland’s attacking shortcomings were becoming a source of frustration, there was at least some consolation in the fact that the Black Cats had recorded back-to-back clean sheets.
Indeed, it was the defensive resilience of his side that appeared to provide Le Bris with the greatest satisfaction as he reflected on another difficult away assignment.
It was another tough game away against a strong team.
It wasn’t enough to score but in the end it was a good point away.
For sure, we were a bit lucky maybe but we need luck sometimes. We are not happy because the performance is not what we wanted but it’s still another point.
Ultimately, despite the disappointment surrounding the performance, Sunderland extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and maintained their position at the top of the Championship table, ahead of promotion rivals Leeds United and Sheffield United.
It was perhaps a measure of just how far we’d progressed under Le Bris that a goalless draw away from home could provoke such frustration among supporters, particularly when the result did little to damage their increasingly promising promotion ambitions.
There would undoubtedly be more exhilarating performances and memorable victories to come as the season unfolded, but evenings such as this were also an important part of the journey.
After all, as Le Bris would regularly remind supporters throughout the campaign, sometimes you simply have to “respect the point”.
