Former Kentucky offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete has been waived by the Dallas Cowboys, according to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The good news for Pete is that Harris also reported he could return to the Cowboys’ practice squad, but he would first have to clear the 24-hour waiver process. Pete made history earlier this year as the first Navajo player to sign an NFL contract, and he made a strong impression during the preseason. Members of the Navajo Nation came out to watch Pete play,
and he made an impact on the field.
After the game, Pete was asked to give a postgame speech, and he delivered a memorable message, saying in part, “This game, this star, this team will make us brothers.”
Although Pete did not make the Cowboys’ initial roster, there is still a chance he could remain in Dallas by joining the practice squad. If he clears waivers, the Cowboys could bring him back, but he would also be free to explore opportunities with other NFL teams.
Pete’s powerful speeches are not new to Kentucky fans. He became known for delivering passionate messages during his time in Lexington, and that leadership continued into his first NFL preseason.
Pete played one season at Kentucky in 2025 after spending four seasons at New Mexico State. He appeared in 45 career games, including 33 at New Mexico State and 12 at Kentucky, while making 42 starts.
During his lone season with the Wildcats, Pete started all 12 games at left tackle and was named one of four game captains for Kentucky’s game at South Carolina. He graded out at 98% on assignments and 76% in technique while recording a team-high 35 knockdowns and 100 blocks at the point of attack.
Pete’s journey to the NFL was historic beyond football. He became the first Navajo player to sign an NFL contract, representing his heritage on one of the biggest stages in professional sports.
Now, Pete will wait to see whether he clears waivers and gets another opportunity with the Cowboys or another NFL team. Regardless of where his football journey continues, Pete has already made history and left a lasting impression on Kentucky fans.
