During the offseason, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn decided to take over defensive playcalling. He called it his “superpower.”
I respected the decision. Had Glenn hired someone else to do it and it failed, Glenn would have been fired. For the rest of his life, he’d be filled with regret and wondering what could have happened had he taken over playcalling, considering that was a big reason he got the Jets job anyway.
Glenn chose to live and die by the sword. If he was an excellent defensive playcaller,
he would have received flowers and all of the credit. However, if it failed, Glenn would die by the sword and have no regrets.
Well, eight games into the 2026 season, the Jets sit at 2-6.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets are only the third team in the last 45 years “to lose after scoring on their first six possessions.”
How did that happen? The Jets’ defense collapsed like a used lawn chair. The Jets’ defense has served as the perfect antidote for ailing teams. Miami was 0-5 and never held a lead all season until they played the Jets and were cured. Las Vegas had lost four in a row, and suddenly the Jets cured their problems.
Glenn getting fired is no longer a question of if, but rather when. Whenever that time comes, Glenn will have died by the same sword he wielded, promising that things would turn around.
