The Detroit Lions officially have a winner for the backup quarterback job. According to Tom Pelissero, the Lions are waiving undrafted rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer, and veteran Josh Dobbs will back up Jared Goff this season.
While Altmyer had an impressive training camp for an undrafted rookie, the writing for the backup job seemed on the wall after the final preseason game. Dobbs played a near-perfect game in two quarters of work, completing 15-of-19 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile,
Altmyer turned the ball over twice and led just one scoring drive over the other two quarters against the Colts.
Per Pelissero, the Lions would like to bring back Altmyer on the practice squad, but he’ll have to clear waivers first. Teams have until 1 p.m. ET on Monday to put in their waiver claims. Soon after, we’ll hear if Altmyer is heading elsewhere or signing to the Lions’ practice squad to continue his development.
